"Note that 'unaccompanied minors' is now a term of art. It no longer means 'minors who come to the border unaccompanied,' but rather 'children who have been ripped from the arms of their parents and put into concentration camps built for that purpose.'

[...]

"Tomorrow [today now] is the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The enemy that was engaged on the beaches of Normandy has reappeared inside our own shores. It must be destroyed yet again."

-- Paul Campos, 2019-06-05

"I wonder if I will be alive when some future politician solemnly apologizes to the victims of the late 2010s concentration camps and swears that America will not repeat those mistakes.

"Japanese internment was an atrocity but it was committed in the context of a world war that people were understandably anxious about (even if internment was not in any way justified or useful.) I thought we had learned our lesson and would never do anything like it again.

"Instead we are doing it in peacetime for no discernible reason beyond putrid sadism."

I worry that some of those camps "Nobody" expects to be built will be built in Canada over Canadian objections...and that the Canadians objecting to the construction will be the first to be interned there. I want to be wrong about this fear in a way that leaves me celebrating.

I think Nobody is referring to the already-built camps on the southern US border where my country, ostensibly to protect us, has been putting children in cages.

In fact, the context for Japanese internment - and this is attested to in the historical record! - includes the reality that white farmers on the West Coast saw their chance to get rid of their more productive Japanese rivals.

And this is why everybody had to dig up their parks to plant vegetables in the USA.

Oh, there are reasons beyond putrid sadism! There's also chest-thumping bravado ("I am POWERFUL; bow to me!") and ego ("I'm gonna build the biggest wall ever!") and obstruction ("if I can't have what I want then you can't either!") and the tantrums of a really ill-behaved toddler.

Sigh. I'm embarrassed by my country's government.
