I grew up in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains, in a place where the mountains are almost always visible on the horizon and also the ground visibly slopes towards them. That left me with a similar primality of the "towards the mountains" direction (in this case, that's North) and if I'm near enough to mountains to see them or even just standing on a hillside I have to remind myself that the primal direction might not be the same one as I'm used to.
Fortunately this is mostly irrelevant to my daily life, because I live in a non-Cartesian city. The cardinal directions here are in, out, clockwise, and counterclockwise (with "in" as the primal direction) and the usual cardinal directions are just not relevant.
