"Natural disasters favor no one. When some people are spared by chance, they look very petty when they crow that they're under special divine protection." -- [info] madfilkentist, 2011-06-02 (after one church in MA.US boasted that St. Anne had protected it, while another church nearby was damaged)

[I think something similar applies when we give in to the temptation to make snarky comments about covid-19 being spread at CPAC. Viruses aren't just, poetically or otherwise, and it's going to hit plenty of people and groups we agree with -- while more of the "it's a hoax / it's no big deal" people have been conservatives, it's mostly the luck of the draw that the first political gathering to get attention for covid-19 was CPAC.]

I agree. I think some people are feeling schadenfreude, even knowing it may circle around, and some people are reacting to previous statements by conservative people that God is on (only) their side in reactions to other disasters.

My annoyance about the virus at CPAC isn't that they were "afflicted" but that the vast majority haven't had the common sense and common courtesy to socially distance themselves to keep it from going further. Those are politically powerful people, who encounter many more people in the course of a day or week than you or I -- and each one can be a vector spreading it further.

Yeah. I'm definitely taking time to stop and savor the schadenfreude, but it's because it's the only consolation for the fact that entitled privileged people are their own special sort of vector.

Didja all catch the news about the sportsball professional who tested positive days after making a point of touching reporters' mics?

I hadn't caught that he'd made a point of touching mics. Jerk.
