"There are many signs that the judgment of God is upon the church as never before. Unless the early sacrificial spirit is recaptured, I am very much afraid that today's Christian church will lose its authenticity, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and we will see the Christian church dismissed as a social club with no meaning or effectiveness for our time, as a form without substance, as salt without savor. The real tragedy, though, is not Martin Luther King's disillusionment with the church -- for I am sustained by its spiritual blessings as a minister of the gospel with a lifelong commitment: The tragedy is that in my travels, I meet young people of all races whose disenchantment with the church has soured into outright disgust." -- Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (b. 1929-01-15, d. 1968-04-04), Interview in Playboy, January 1965

He went to where the audiences of the day were to deliver his sermons, didn't he?

How does this apply to the citation?
Are you suggesting that this somehow detracts from Dr. King's message and/or insights?

No.

Wiser and more courageous than I might have been in his place.

Heh, I just noticed the interview venue. Not a bad idea on his part. Get that message out!

Decline in Church Attendance graph: 1952-2012

Note that King's speech happens just after the high point in this graph, and just before the quick slide down.

This decline doesn't surprise me but I disagree with the original quote. I don't believe it is a judgement from God on the church but a judgement of the world on the church's. As church became more of an entertainment and a place to be seen. Couple that with a lot of church doctrine that doesn't go along with the text that the church is based on and you have a problem. Then add in the tendency of many church groups to say "our way is the only way" while discounting the reality of humans and science and you have a bigger problem. Then add in the increasing tendency for the church to involve itself in politics for its own good and yes many people in America are disenchanted with the whole thing. Additionally due to things like the internet people are finding that there are other ways out there and perhaps one of those would resonate more with a given person.

I will admit to some amusement that the quote is from an interview with Playboy and many branches of the church would condemn him for having anything to do with that magazine which focused on lust rather than procreation.

I don't believe the Reverend was wrong on that point, whether the judgement of/upon(?) churches in general was delivered by God or by the human world. Or both, come to think of it.
