"We don't know how many women were working in the labs of famous male scientists, or how many discoveries women contributed to, because for centuries men did a very good job hiding the achievements of women." -- Jess Wade, quoted in "The Woman Whose Invention Helped Win a War - and Still Baffles Weathermen" (about Joan Curran), by Irena Fischer-Hwang, Smithsonian Magazine, 2018

I feel a surge of rage every time I contemplate this topic, and all the fights I had in my teens and twenties with boys and men who insisted that science, engineering and discovery were the province of men. "Just look at history!" they'd say, and I didn't yet know how edited and expurgated history was but I felt it in my bones, but I didn't have the evidence (and hadn't yet learned bigots don't care anyway).

Rargh.

I'm reminded of the story of Hatshepsut's successor, some fuckboy whose name I can't be arsed to remember, erasing all traces of her name so she'd be erased from the Egyptian afterlife. Except, well, archeology happened. And I'm so pleased to see that women who were deliberately erased are being remembered again.
