They weren't just inhospitable to visitors; they were actively cruel according to the midrash, and from the plain text we get that rape, and giving up one's daughters for rape, was apparently perfectly normal. The people of S'dom treated other people like crap, enough so that people's pleas moved God to act. That is the core problem from which all their others derived.
