[It hasn't been the party of small government or fiscal responsibility for a long time, though it likes to don that costume when a Democrat is in the White House. But becoming the Trump Party is new damage, and damning.]

It hasn't been the party of small government or fiscal responsibility for a long time, ...
One needs remember that the Republican Party isn't talking to working men and woman, i.e. Joe Six-pack on main street, but to the very greedy way-too-wealthy.
Terms defined:
  "limited government"
      We'll rid you/us of laws/regulations that only serve to protect people [trash, Hoi polloi, vulgar masses, etc.] you have working for you/us.
  "fiscal responsibility"
      You/we stole/looted it, and we're going to work to make sure you/we get to keep it.
