I wish I believed that line of argumentation worked. But it relies on the listener valuing the happiness of others, and I think a lot of the problems of our society come from the non-trivial population that feels, "Well, nobody's ever cared about my happiness, so why should I care about yours. Nobody ever offered me a pill to feel 10 times happier growing up. I suffered, so you should suffer too."
Sigh.
