"tried explaining how long COVID is disabling to a coworker yesterday, & it was like their brain record skipped

"…they sort of jumped back to talking about the previous topic as if I'd said nothing

"people are not ready to talk about disability + COVID, it's gonna be bad"

It’s almost an invitation to ask about *their* disability!

“Whoo… Didn’t know that you’d also had Covid.”

(Not wanting to suggest other things one could say about their missing brain cells…)

I have noticed this. People outright deny it. I have a friend my age with permanent heart damage and a friend's teenage daughter has long covid and it's like, people don't believe me?? like high-energy teenagers just spontaneously develop fatigue that doesn't let them do their favourite thing in the world, and middle-aged women spontaneously get heart damage, and it has nothing to do with the fact that they both got covid???

I'm already wondering when the hidden consequences of my first bout are gonna bite me. And how.

I see unmasked people laughing out loud about whatever while on the job in my local supermarket, and I just know it's going to happen again and be worse the next time. If not for me, then for whomever I pass it onto. The fatalism just angers me.

I particularly can't stand that they're always laughing and smiling. It's like. Dude. Life still sucks. You are either fake-laughing or you're happy about eugenics. Stop rubbing it in all our faces.

Well, of course, it just makes sense that if COVID-19 was all a hoax, the there's no such as long COVID, either.

People's brains seem to go TILT for any type of acquired disability in particular. Born with disabilities gets pity and aversion like they want to ward off any chance of "catching" the same disability, and therefore an acquired disability that is actually contagious hits some people in an atavistic superstition reaction.

Sigh. I'm born with congenital disabilities and acquired some more. I'm adjusting to wearing a mask in public for the rest of my life. COVID causes vascular damage, and I have congenital heart disease, and had open heart surgery before turning 45, 5 years ago. Anybody insults me wearing a mask, I describe what I remember of the ventilator. I still have nightmares. It's not kind of me, but being mean to me for protecting myself is also mean.

Yes, it is. It absolutely is. So you do what you have to do to self-protect.

At this point I'm adjusting to the idea of wearing an N95 indoors the rest of my life, and I am fortunate enough not to have any disabilities or significant medical conditions yet. This isn't to disagree with your assessment, particularly about the brain-tilt that many people have when considering that they can become a disabled person at any time; just ... to share horrified wonder that people would rather pretend it can't happen.

I wish I could grant you th power to beam the sensation directly into their brain so you wouldn't have to spend as much time on their malarkey.
