"I've been hearing almost all my life about 'overachievers' and 'underachievers'.

"What, these days, is considered just plain achieving? Is that passing the math test? Is it getting a raise?

"What's the difference between that and either of the others?"

'Achiever'
. - - someone who's completing their goals.

'Underachiever'
. - - value judgement by another that the person isn't motivated in the same manner as the judger or not to the judger's imposed standards.

'Overachiever'
. - - a person who's gone past their ability level and is making a mess.

Underachiever: someone who didn't get as far in the school or work world as the speaker thinks they should have.

Overachiever: someone who got farther in the school or work world than the speaker thinks they should have.

Achiever: the mythical happy medium between the two.
