"All I want is for everyone saying they think parents should be notified if their kid is using a different name/pronouns at school to be asked what they think parents should do with that information

"A right to know implies that some kind of action will be taken as a result, and I think it's pretty fair to ask what they think that action should be"

"Closing comments on this now since it blew up overnight and getting called a groomer by a bunch of randos isn't my idea of a good time, but if you want to know why I wrote this in the first place, check out all the replies promising transphobic 'interventions' and child abuse" -- Louisa ([twitter.com profile] LouisatheLast), the following day

Should there be a requirement that kids be notified about what's going on in parents' lives?

Abusive parents are still a real fact of kids' lives, whether abuse comes from a place of transphobia or not. So a certain amount of caution is called for in any case.

I was thinking about things like impending divorce, non-consensual adultery, job loss on the horizon.

If there's something serious/bad going on at school, as a parent I want to know about it. Other stuff my kid will let me know about as they see fit. These parents obviously put their kid being nb/trans under serious/bad stuff. And of course that's the problem.

Anyone want to bet how many times the school calls a parent because a kid goes by their middle name or a nickname or a derivation of their given name? I'm sure it happens even if the use name is the same perceived gender as the given name. As someone whose use name was not on legal documents for years, being told that nicknames are unprofessional when almost everyone else in the office was using a derivation of given name (e.g. Bob for Robert or Peg or Margaret) was infuriating and I was enough of an adult to handle it.
