"As we enter January's toxic diet culture, a reminder that BMI isn't a measure of health, but was invented by a statistician based on white men, in the 1800s when Ketchup was branded a medicine, cocaine was available in every pharmacy and vibrators were prescribed for 'hysteria'." -- Marina Politis (she/her) ([twitter.com profile] marinadpol), 2023-01-01

[Today is the 11th day of Christmas, for folks who celebrate it on the Gregorian calendar. Old-calendar Orthodox Christmas is around the corner.]

" and vibrators were prescribed for 'hysteria'."

You needed a script for a vibrator? The jokes - they write themselves.

That said, I know a woman who couldn't stop crying after the death of her long time boyfriend. She'd fall asleep crying and wake up crying. Her daughter bought her a vibrator and she... in her own words, "rubbed one off." That broke the cycle and she was able to regain her life and grieve normally.

That would argue in favor of something to break the cycle, not necessarily in favor of vibrators specifically.

Heh, have you seen the movie _Hysteria_? It is a highly fictionalized account of the invention of vibrators.
