"Separating king and country is difficult for modern American Christians to comprehend because too often we incorporate nationalism and patriotism into much of our religious expression, and even our faith. It's not uncommon for churches to celebrate the Fourth of July, adorn their sanctuaries with American flags, and incorporate America and American nationalism into songs of worship. But for the very first followers of Jesus, these types of ideals and symbols would be alarming and even considered blasphemous.

"The challenge for Christians is to simultaneously honor the virtues of sacrifice, service and freedom without idolizing the sin of nationalism, to celebrate bravery without romanticizing violence, and to realize that our salvation comes from the Prince of Peace and not the wars of men."

For some reason, your link didn't work, but this link did.

It never occurred to me to think that a Fourth of July celebration is a problem when a religion does it, but maybe it is. I wonder how such celebrations are handled for other countries and other religions.

It bothered me growing up in my church to have a big US flag right at the pulpit, but I guess it could have been worse (Confederate flag).

This is a real interesting point and, I think, sheds some light on how hard other religions have it trying to explain the gravity of their holidays/beliefs etc. Some sort of latent "well if Yom Kippur were actually important it'd be a national holiday" stuff.

Preach. And the sneaky idolatry of perfectionism. If we try to make our country better and work toward accountability and repair, we don't love it. If we look at nuance in sacred text and approach the people in at flawed humans, we don't really take our spiritual lives seriously. This is why I'm a professional heretic.
