With deepest regrets, I write to inform you of Daphne's passing.
About 19:00 Saturday, realinterrobang phoned me, concerned that she had not heard from Daphne since Thursday. She asked whether I could check that Daphne was OK.
I phoned several mutual friends, but none had heard from Daphne in the last couple of days. Since anniemal still has keys to Daphne's house, we drove to Baltimore, arriving about 22:00, and let ourselves in when there was no response at the door and her phone still went unanswered.
We found Daphne in her bathtub. She hadn't gotten as far as turning the water on.
We'll be back in Baltimore again Sunday to catch her cat. It was a very busy night for a reclusive cat, with police and medical examiners coming and going.
Thank you for letting us know. I saw a post on Facebook this morning that she had passed, and I'm stunned to hear of her death. I never got to meet her in person, and I can't imagine how those who knew her personally must be feeling right now.
Thank you, both for checking in on her and for letting us know. I never got the chance to meet Daphne offline, but will miss her company and many talents here on the net.
Thank you so much. As much as the rest of us are shocked and grieving, I can't imagine how much more you and anniemal are going through right now. Much love.
Thank you for letting us know and checking. D was an amazing person, but like a lot of people we dropped out of contact due to COViD and I always thought "I'll see her at Balticon". Time doesn't work like that sometimes...
Thank you for posting and for checking on her. I'm in a bit of shock but it sounds like at least she went quickly and I'm glad that the cat is being cared for.
What terrible news! Thank you for letting us know. I will miss her, and regret even more now that I missed her at this last Pennsic. It's so easy to say "next time" and then wham, there won't be a next time.
Thank you for checking on her and letting us know. We were acquaintances online and in RL and I wish we had gotten to be friends. Have you had any luck finding the cat and getting them to safety and rehomed? Do you need help with this? Let me know. I’m in Greenbelt, MD and know a couple of good rescues in the area. I just lost a good friend in Seattle alone at home from diabetes and got her cats rescued and rehomed well, and may things go as well for this kitty, as I’m sure D would want most and I’d be glad to help get those connections made.
Thank you for letting us know...for all you did for her. I'm so sorry you had to be the ones to find her; as an emt I'd been first on scene many times so I have some awareness of what it was like for you, if any of you want to vent about it to someone who's been there my DMs are open, please don't hesitate if it would help at all. * * * * * * *
When I first met Daphne... ahh hell, nobody ever forgets the first time they met her, especially if it was at a con. Arisia in Boston, decades ago, and there she was in splendor; guitar and portable amp, glorious, flowing brown hair and beard, a skirt, a floofy shirt, and heels that made her seem eight feet tall to my teenaged self...probably the first person I ever met who lived the nonbinary out loud, ESPECIALLY back then, and I don't know if I ever told her fully that she was a big reason I found my own way to figuring out and accepting I wasn't cis either, because we had many other things in common too in fandom, in music, in ways of life, and she showed me all of these could be true at once. Conventions fade but friendship did not, we stayed in touch ever since and for that I'm grateful. Last few days I felt like something was wrong...
I miss your presence in my life already, D. I hope you know that. You were one of the few people left from that time in my life, with much in common that nobody else had, experiences that few others remember anymore. Sleep well. <3
I never knew Daphne as Daphne. I read through all these messages, as well as in other threads, wondering about this person. Then I saw Gary McGath's post on rec.music.filk, beginning "Daphne Eftychia Arthur, formerly D. Glenn Arthur"— and I nearly jumped out of my chair. I remember her as him, whom I hadn't seen in many years. Her passing is truly a loss to the filk community.
[BTW & FWIW: As a (retired) linguist, I recognized the middle name as Greek but didn't know what it meant. Wikipedia:
"Eutychia, phonetically transliterated as Eftychia (/ˌɛftiˈhiːə/; Greek: ευτυχία) is a Greek female given name, meaning 'happiness'. It is derived from the Greek words εὖ (good) and τύχη (luck)."]
I've so enjoyed Daphne's writing and selected quotes these many years. She seemed consistently kind as well as wise, and ever open to learning more about the world and herself. She will be missed. My sorrow especially for those who were close to her.
Requiescat in Pace, Daphne

P.S. Do you know where I should be following to learn of any arrangements for a funeral or memorial? I'm not a FB user.

Proud of her heritage. And she did it honor.
