I've been trying to finish last-minute stuff so I can return to Pennsic and stay up there for the next week and a half. Since I was up, I caught the television news report of the Big Fire next to Bethlehem Steel. I looked out my window but couldn't see the flames. But when I had to go upstairs after the sun had come up, I saw a most dramatic black stripe across the sky. Following it back to the source, I found out why I couldn't see the flames during the night: a tree has grown tall enough to block my view in that directon. I can make out the spot where the smoke starts, but the flames were just a little too low. I was tempted to climb a neighbour's fire escape and see what I could see from the roof, but I decided the loooooong horizontal plume was dramatic enough for now.
