Looks like I'll be spending the rest of the evening in a hospital. Just got home from a personal errand to find email from my mother:

Mark is at the University of Maryland Hospital Emergency Room. He had an accident at work and was taken there about 7:00 p.m. [...] I do not drive very well at night, so I wondered if you would please go over to the hospital and comfort him a little.

I need to teach my brother programming or system adminstration or something (he's expressed an interest) -- those are somewhat less injury-prone professions than what he's doing now.

I'll try to remember to pass along your hello in the next day or two. He's doing construction work these days -- thing is, he was just off for an extended period recovering from carpal tunnel surgery. (Yes, he wants to learn computer skills even though he's already had CTS -- he got that from using a hammer, apparently.)

And last I heard from John (for anyone coming in late, that's my other brother), he was working in a health club. Hey, did you ever hear either of his band's CDs?

Just to complete the set of family updates, my sister Maria gave birth to my mother's first grandchild just over two weeks ago.

oh my god, Maria has a child? the last time i remember seeing her, she was telling us about her first shooting on her job as a cop -- a possum that refused to die.

i have both of John's band's CDs. did i ever tell you my brother Evan has a bunch of records out? he did some sort of EP with his first band, the Pee Tanks. then he did two CDs with his next serious band, Cross My Heart. now he's playing with ex-members of Cross My Heart in Liars Academy, who have their own CD out.

i have to say, i'm not all that impressed with the 2nd Cross My Heart CD. but my brother turns out to be one hell of a drummer. and one of the two other people on lj who lists Pee Tanks as an interest put me on his friends list. i suppose he's hoping to hear useful news about Evan, but i haven't seen the kid in almost three years, and last time it was only because his band was in town and they needed crash space.

nice kids, though. lots of nifty tattoos. and you would not believe what a babe magnet Evan turned out to be.

funny how these things work -- i was the one who always wanted to be a musician; he wanted to be a writer. now i write for a living, and he does music.

It is funny how things work out, yes. Way beyond the periodic "Gee, if you'd told me in high school that I'd eventually experience _____ I would have said you were nuts" moments. Y'know, I still miss hearing you sing!
