I'm pretty sure that my reaction upon seeing you for the first time (what, 15 years ago? something like that) was approximately: "Wow, beard plus skirt. That's someone who has the self-confidence not to give a f--k what the rest of us think." I didn't, and don't, think of it as "brave" per se; more that you know who you are, you know it's not mainstream, and you're ok with that.
For all practical purposes you're the only TG person I know (a friend told me recently that he's tending that way and going to start acting on it), so I don't have a lot of data to go on. But that's one observer's take, for what it's worth.
