It does take quite a lot of rubbing to hurt brass. But the finished pieces had a thick layer of clear nail polish anyhow, to keep them bright and shiny. (And yes, the bare brass feels neater than the polish.)

Copper is associated with Cyprus both economically and symbolically. The colour of the silhouette of the island on the Cypriot flag is supposed to represent copper, though I've always seen it done in a more golden colour. Copper is associated with Aphrodite, who was born in Cyprus (she arose from the sea foam on the shore). And copper is one of the products of Cyprus.

I bet a rough or burnished copper with those blue letters WOULD look great! Thanks for the explanation. I thought Aphrodite came from Zeus' head -- no, that was Athena.
