So we've got this gig coming up that I'll be playing instead of going to Arisia, and our hammered dulcimer player won't be there (nor one of our two fiddlers, but that doesn't affect the rest of this sentence), so if we do the "Butterfly" slip-jig, I'll be starting it off on melody in unison with the flute. I'd been starting with a slide up to the B on the 3rd string because I liked the slightly stronger tone of that B (it's no louder than my open 2nd string, just different overtones) and also because I liked that sort of "Whoooop da dum da dum" feeling I got from the slide. The other guitarist (who usually plays cittern if I'm there, but sometimes plays guitar, renaissance guitar, baroque guitar, or lute, and plays even more early fretted string instruments in other groups and solo) said he thought I should just start with the open 2nd string because of the clearer sound and because I could let it ring over the next few notes. He's right about it being cool to let the B ring for the rest of the measure. I said I'd practice it both ways. So later on, I figure I'll record myself playing it both ways, then play both back a few times to figure out which I like better.
