Not sure where this originally came from, but I got it from [livejournal.com profile] xpioti. Sharing the brain-ouch with folks not already reading her journal, 'cause I'm mean that way:

Denver, CO (UPI) - At Denver International Airport today, an individual later discovered to be a university professor from Boulder, Colorado, was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a compass, a protractor, and a graphing calculator. Authorities believe he is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement. He is being charged with carrying weapons of math instruction.

My first thought was, "You know, I could almost see that happening, especially at DIA."

Guess where the word Algebra came from ...

*nod* One thing I wondered when I first saw the joke was how many people reading it knew that algebra was really an Arabic word, not just a word you could make sound Arabic. Then I tried to figure out whether it was funnier knowing that or not knowing it, and couldn't decide.

The earliest version I ran into of this is an Iraqi teacher, and not at an airport. Then it moved to Heathrow. It doesn't surprise me that it has moved to the States.
