They're positing that marriage comes only from Christianity, see, and that it is still only a Christian institution.

Which is so clearly incorrect I can't even begin to articulate all the problems inherent in it.

No, they're positing that it comes from God. Which is only slightly more sensible, as it allows them to acknowledge that there _was_, in fact, marriage before 4 BCE, and that there _are_ marriage traditions in other faiths that are older than Christianity.

But again, that brings up the whole question of "how do you KNOW what God intends? How much evidence do you have? Do you have any more than those people over there, who argue that God in fact intended the complete opposite?"

sorry, yes. God. But a God who really only /communicates/ and /approves of/ Christians.

(I'm only frothing against closed minded fundies, really.)
