From a web page summarizing a book called The Chemist's English:

Prof. Schoenfeld's definition of a "good paper" is one that is written so as to yield up its information to the reader in the shortest possible reading time.

According to this criterion, the quality of a paper as a function of its information density goes through a maximum between the twin extremes of "rocks of terseness" and "swamps of verbosity".

While a paper needs to convey data to be useful, and precision and objectivity are required for accuracy in conveying it, I had a hard time grinding everything poetic, joyful, and non-detached out of my writing while majoring in biology. The dances of molecules are organic Kabuki. Trying to be "scientific" in my writing struck me as denying the beauty of anatomy, physiology, evolution--endless list. Major beef. I guess I was just very young. And now I am six?
