Gotta get these off my screen 'cause they're in the way of actual work I need to do...

I'm experimenting with a new format. I saw in a poll elsewhere that some folks would rather see link-sausage entries cut-tagged, but I didn't want to put the entire list behind a cut-tag, but please let me know what y'all think of keeping individual items really short in the main list by putting longer descriptions behind cuts. Thanks. I've got another format to try out next time.

  • I almost feel insensitive for laughing at other people's translation errors, but these are gaffes writ large.
  • (Just because the concept amuses me way more than it deserves.) Amend issued a patch for Foxtrot. From Bill Amend's home page: "A few gazillion readers have written to express concern about Jason's C code in my 10-3-03 strip. Click here for a patch to bring the strip up to version 1.0.1." (Thanks to Ben Levy for point this out.)
  • 7h3 H1570ry 0f 13375p34k (The History of LeetSpeak). "What many people don't realize is that Leetspeak has been around for centuries. [...]" Short read, fun. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] aiglet for pointing it out.)
  • Biological Basis For Creativity Linked To Mental Illness "Scientists have wondered for a long time why madness and creativity seem linked. It appears likely that low levels of latent inhibition and exceptional flexibility in thought might predispose to mental illness under some conditions and to creative accomplishment under others." (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] moominmuppet for the repost)
  • IP Address Locator: enter an IP address and it tells you what geographical location it eems to be associated with. Note that your own IP address will most likely correspond to the location of your ISP rather than your house, of course.
  • 2003 igNobel winners announced (Do I need to explain what the Igs are?)
  • Political cartoon I couldn't resist -- "Toto meets Ashcroft".
  • Bawdy 16th Century plate "It is a rare example of bawdy Renaissance art which survived the suppression of later, more prudish, generations, it said." Apparently the artist created it just to call someone else a dickhead. (Linked to by a fair number of folks.)
  • A history of American intellectual property piracy "The first American 'pirate' was probably Benjamin Franklin (1706-90), who was, among other things, a Philadelphia printer who re-published the works of British authors in the eighteenth century without seeking their permission or offering remuneration." The article goes on to describe Dickens's and Wordsworth's efforts to get the US to recognize British copyrights. (I'm sure I got this from someone's journal, but I'd have to dig through my friends page to try to find it again...)
  • A poll and discussion in [livejournal.com profile] coraline's journal, about circadian rythms, time of birth, and larks vs. owls. It is of course an unscientific "hypothesis sanity check" type of poll, and the discussion has gotten into exactly what we mean by "morning person" and "night person" and to what extent such things change as we age. But as loose as it is, it'll be interesting to see what the answers would look like with a bunch more people chiming in.
