That's the burglar alarm on a house in the 100 block of S. Fulton Ave. (far side of the street) that's preventing me from being able to hear my CD player at any comfortable volume here on Lombard St., except that it sounds more like "BAK-uh'-whè" than "Back Away", almost like some Japanese word I don't know. And it's been going for a quarter hour and the police aren't here yet (I called them after five minutes, because I know from experience that if I don't, nobody else will either, and the thing will go on screeching for up to two and a half hours.)

Fortunately it doesn't go off as often as it used to, and the last few times have been in the afternoon instead of the wee hours of the night. A year or so ago there was a spell where it went off nearly every night and rang from about 01:00 to 03:00.

Oh! It just stopped. Lemme go look outside and see if the police came.

That seems like cool beat poetry to me. I bet you could use it as the refrain to a blank-verse paean about the isolation of modern life, to great effect.
