Good luck getting the house warmer. DON'T expend all its energy in one exothermic reaction. Fire is good -- when tame and confined :-)
Gas might save you in the long run, but it's a fairly large capital investment. Check it out thoroughly (and consider converting next summer if you can hold off; they often have specials for offseason conversions, at least judging by the radio ads here).
