Putting plastic up over windows that you don't expect to open all winter will help with some heat loss. Heavy drapes (or just a blanket) over the plastic helps even more.
I wonder if your car was broken into with the intent of stealing it, but when it wouldn't start the thief just grabbed what they could and ran. Maybe it was good that your car wouldn't start the other day!
