it doesn't cost a fortune to ship it here. it really doesn't. shipping is cheap. pulling it out of the ground in those quantities is cheap, once you've built the capacity, which is expensive and costs as much as the labor. That's the key. *PEOPLE* are cheap over there. Its easy for the American oil companies to make the middle easterner who work or own the land there "rich", at probably 1/4th the price it would take to make an American "rich" from working the oil or building the high-capacity pumps, drills, and refineries.
They also don't care if we drink them dry. We *do* care if we drink ourselves dry. We pull enough out of Texas, PA, and Alaska to keep those locations open and cleanly maintained, until such time as the middle east actually runs itself dry (predicted to be around 2050), then *we* will run the place until our own supplies run dry.
Yes, its rediculously greedy in a way, but that's the nature of any form of Gold, "Black Gold" being no exception.
