Part of the feedback network is that we see change better than we see similarity. As an example, line up a bunch of black squares in a grid with white spaces between them. The intersections of the white corridors will look grayish, because they don't have as much contrast-with-black to make them look truly white.

It's too bad that I don't have my textbook from that _Sense and Perception_ course I took here...
