I can give you a range of reasonable waltz tempos to follow if you want to watch me dance. I need to hear the tune to know whether it wants brisk Viennese or lazy country. Or something in between. I can do it in clogs to pound it out, but haven't any idea what rate is_right_ until I dance it.
I think the others in the band have a tempo in mind (my problem is keeping the tempo even when I start it that slow -- it's one of those tunes a little easier to play slightly faster) but I certainly welcome your suggestion from a dancer's perspective.
Today I noticed another thing: it's a melody I find incredibly difficult to play unornamented. My fingers get confused if I don't throw in slurs and turns and mordants in a bunch of places. This might actually have something to do with my liking to play it so much. Hmm. I'll have to try it on a woodwind and see whether that's still the case.
