What they said. At least having the support of your in-laws is helpful, but a holiday gathering might not be where you want it to happen.
Another option: something ambiguous but not in most people's conceptions of "boy clothes" -- kimono, kilt, not sure what else. Of course, I'm making this suggestion at 2pm on Thursday, so it's going to reduce to materials on hand. :-) (But I know you own a kilt...)
