Haven't written much because I keep telling myself I have to finish more urgent stuff before I "play" on LJ, but here it is Thanksgiving, and I wanted to post a holiday greeting. I'll try to catch up after the weekend, 'cause I doubt I'll manage to do so before Darkover.

Today I'm going to my brother's in-laws' house. Need to decide what to wear. Last time I was there I opted for pants so as to not cause a scene with my mother, even though the in-laws had said I should wear what I wanted. This time it's a similar decision, but at least now Mom has seen me in a skirt once ... but still, it's a holiday with all the odd family-emotional stuff that rides along for those.

It's a tiny bit of a concession, but it might help things a lot, to wear festive but androgynous clothing above the waist, so that while you're sitting at the dinner table, it's not in your mom's face.

That scene is going to happen at least once, I think--the question is whether you'd rather have it at Thanksgiving, with all the family-emotional stuff but also with in-laws backing you, or some other time/place.

What they said. At least having the support of your in-laws is helpful, but a holiday gathering might not be where you want it to happen.

Another option: something ambiguous but not in most people's conceptions of "boy clothes" -- kimono, kilt, not sure what else. Of course, I'm making this suggestion at 2pm on Thursday, so it's going to reduce to materials on hand. :-) (But I know you own a kilt...)

Good luck! See you this weekend.

since i'm not much of a skirt person, lately i've been opting for flowing, feminine pants sets for special occasions -- do you think your mom might be more tolerant of something like that?
