I think I read a story about this once, involving really long term patents. And I'm sure someone out there is painting bricks to look like fruitcakes. Godspeed.

Perhaps you're thinking about "Melancholy Elephants", the Hugo-winning story by Spider Robinson. Perpetual copyright stifling creativity.
