Questions that were on [livejournal.com profile] chibidl's version of the regional English meme but not on most other copies I'd seen...

  1. The children's game where one person has the task of catching any other whereupon they are given the same task?

    "Tag."

  2. A window covering on rollers that pulls down.

"Shade." (When I hear "blinds", I usually think of slatted blinds, either vertical blinds or Venetian blinds. But I have heard the roller-shade referred to as "a blind".)

  3. A new, limited access, multi-lane road.

"That new highway." (When I'm thinking in the context of traffic laws, I think of "highway" as including other types of road as well, but in most ordinary conversation, I'm accustomed to "highway" meaning "controlled access divided highway", i.e. one with on/off ramps and overpasses instead of traffic lights or stop signs, and forbidden to pedestrians and bicyclists.)

  4. Heavy garments worn for work.

#blink# Ah, "work clothes" or "heavy work clothes", I suppose, but I'm more likely to refer to specific types of garments (bluejeans, overalls, lab coat, butcher's apron, etc.) I think.
  5. The highest grade of gasoline?

I tend to think "high test" but say "premium". I grew up hearing my dad always call it "high test".

  6. An unusually heavy rain that does not last long.

"Squall" or "downpour" depending on the presence or absence of wind.

  7. The area in the house where people usually sit.

Depends on the house, really. The architecture, how it's decorated, and how the people living there tend to use it. "Living room", "family room", "sitting room", or "parlour".

  8. The paper thing used for carrying things home from the store.

"Bag" (or "paper bag"). I hear "sack" around here (for paper) occasionally, but not often. ("Sack" shows up more often referring to cloth.) I know "poke" as a synonym, but would have to stop and think a moment if I heard it in casual conversation, 'cause I never hear it.

  9. A knit head covering that fits tightly

Not quite sure what this question is trying to describe, but it sounds like it could be referring to what I call a "ski cap" but quite often hear others refer to as a "stocking cap".

I think the highest grade of gasoline is 99. I've seen it sold in Illinois at the local gas station as "Racing fuel".

Everyone knows that a "knit head covering that fits tightly" is called a toque! ;)

(That's pronounced like the first syllable of "Tewkesbury," and not like "took," or "toke.")
