When our house got zapped in a storm a year and a half ago, the only computer that took permanent damage was the one connected to a UPS. The UPS claimed to be working just fine, but I got rid of it and replaced it with one that asserts a guarantee if equipment gets fried. Of course, I don't know if you can actually collect on such guarantees, but I'd already been hosed by a UPS that didn't offer that so I figured I'd give it a shot.
