What do you mean by "get the hang of" ABC? If you mean composing/transcribing/editing in it with a text editor, yeah it takes a little getting used to and I still have to look things up. (But it's how I was able to have typeset copies of a tune at a camping event the day after I wrote it, with only a telnet client and a web browser available on the computers on site that one could rent time on.)
If you mean being able to view and print the tunes already out there in ABC, then it should simply be a matter of finding the least annoying ABC program for your operating system. (Whether reality is any harder than that, I don't know firsthand; I've only gotten around to installing command-line Linux ABC programs so far: abc2ps and abc2midi, which do what I need in a not-annoying-to-Glenn way.)
"Every day is special, if you make it so."
And sometimes being able to boil an essay down to a bumper sticker is a very useful thing. That's short enough to tape to my bedroom door or something.
abc - I just don't seem to get along with it, nor do I find the software so easy to use, though I think my tabledit program can handle it; theres at least one site online that will let you convert the music to gif or midi then and there which I find more useful.
