I think I've found something that explains the number of Pagans and mystics among hackers:

Thoughts give birth to a creative force that is neither elemental nor sideral. Thoughts create a new heaven, a new firmament, a new source of energy, from which new arts flow. When a man undertakes to create something, he establishes a new heaven, as it were and from it the work that he desires to create flows into him. For such is the immensity of man that he is greater than heaven and earth.
     - Philipus Aureolus Paracelsus
(I found the quote here.)

That certainly explains why I'm finding them all over the art world, too.

Actual conversation in the Fringe office.

External Relations Director: When is the Solstice, exactly?

Me (franticly searching the web): Umm...

Program Director: [gives correct answer]

Me: Where did you get that so fast?

Program Director: Right off my calendar.

Me (peering at the calendar): Wow! This is a very special calendar. It has all kinds of astrological data on it. Where did you find this?

Program Director: What, you've never seen "Llewellyn's Witches' Calendar" before?

Me: D'oh! I've never seen it in someone's office at work before!!
