"It's bad civic hygiene to build an infrastructure that can be used to facilitate a police state." -- Bruce Schneier, CTO of Counterpane Internet Security, "Fingerprinting Visitors Won't Offer Security", Newsday.com, 2004-01-14. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] redbird for pointing it out.)

I haven't flown since 2000, because my easy-to-sleep-in headband upset the metal detector even then. I travel with my dog, won't not, and though I'm willing to give up doing my nails while flying, and remove all metal from my purse, (not easy), am afraid someone else will possess a nail file or swiss army knife, and that will delay the flight, make connections awkward, and mean that my doggie stays in stinky loud bad places longer than he has to.

Oh, and if I don't have anything like a dinky knife, nail file, or a box cutter, how the hell am I to begin to defend the the plane against terrorists? At least ones without bombs and guns.

So I don't go see Mom. I miss her, but I'm far less afraid of terrorism than I am of my own government's zealotry's effect on my life. Airlines have lost me. Sorry for not doing my bit for the economy. Phhhht.

That quote best sums up my feelings on the State of the Union, as it were. -H...
