The power supply fan in my main Linux box just stopped turning. This is ungood. I should have access to LJ and slightly less convenient than usual access to email until I get this fixed, but there's more urgent stuff I was in the middle of on that box that I need to rearrange.

The last time I was in the area, I noticed that the Computer Renaissance store in Catonsville was gone. Time to hit their website I suppose, to find out whether there's still a store anywhere within reach, and then check my bank account.

Timing of hardware failures always sucks, but ... sheesh. I had other urgent stuff that Must Be Finished Today scheduled for the next few hours, dammit.

I have stripped several power supplies for parts including fans when do you need the fan by?

I'm going to try to muddle through with other hardware tonight and hope I don't have to re-install GIMP on another box to do so, 'cause I figure that'll be a little faster than getting out the screwdriver. So late tonight or sometime
tomorrow would be good if that's convenient for you. (I need to run down to Bowie tonight or tomorrow night, so I can pick it up in Crofton.)

Thanks.

well I went to LUMSFS tonite so you didn't have a chance to pick it up tonite. LUMSFS btw was well attended this time (13 total but 2 left before the last came). I am working in B'more again so I could drop it by and the fan's thin enough I could drop it through your mailslot. I am likely to drop 2-3 if I can find them just to increase your chances of having one that works.

My going to Bowie is postponed until today (Friday). Dropping them through my mailslot at whatever hour is good, otherwise I'll try to catch up to you in Crofton at some point. Thanks.

Yes. Electronic devices run on smoke.

When the smoke escapes it stops working. ;-)

And, importantly, once the smoke escapes, you can never get it back in.

You could try PC Retro if you're looking for old parts. 301-937-8440
I think they have a location in Columbia or Greenbelt or something.

Thanks. It looks like Computer Renaissance has gotten out of the used business. I'm going to try just replacing the fan for now, but knowing where to go for a whole 'nuther supply is extremely useful info.
