Wow, there's a name I hadn't thought of in a while. I'd forgotten about his cut-paper work until you posted that comment.

Was it just the cutout look that made you think of Matisse, or was it something more?

I read that he switched to cut-paper because of physical problems that made painting difficult. I wonder what he would have done with Photoshop. I know one modern artist who switched to computer art after physical problems made it difficult for her to paint, and her current work still comes off quite painterly.
