There have been some cars with belt-driven transmission, or variator drive. The continuously variable "gear ratio" makes for a very smooth driving experience. But if one is used to hearing the engine revs go up and down in pace with the gear switches, it is slightly disconcerting.
In the DAF and the Volvo 66, at least, the system permitted reversing as fast as forwarding. Steering gets a bit tricky...
