"I had other priorities in the '60s than military service." -- Dick Cheney, Vice President of the United States, on his lack of military experience during the Vietnam War. (From the Quotation of the day mailing list, submitted there by Paul Cezanne.)

Well in all honesty, if I'd been that age at that time, I certainly would have had other priorities as well!

Dearlove, you were never remotely in line for second to the presidency/Commander-in-Chief thing, were you? And I have a hard time believing you'd say and do what Cheney has. If we were allowed to know all of it.

Yes, context counts -- speaker, position, recent actions and other statements. No, if I were veep, I'd be doing and saying different things than Cheney, and my own lack of military experience would seem less ironic.

So why aren't we all more impressed? Yo, Dick: It wasn't an all-volunteer military back then. I'm guessing that MOST of the boys who were drafted (to die) had OTHER priorities.

I'm impressed that Dick was able to come up with a statement that caused me to lose respect for him. I would have thought I was already so far below zero that any further falling was impossible.

'sigh' Go back to ripping off the government while buying off people with your 'fiscally responsible' tax cuts. Idiot.

Well here's hoping that after next January we won't be thinking about him as often (can I hold my breath until November?).

Please don't try :-)
