Based on having legally changed my name at age 18 I'd have to say that I was still the same me but it is also true that people looked at me differently. By the wishes of my family, I went from a German-Jewish name to a WASP name (13th most common in the US at the time. I looked it up while in the genealogical archives in Dallas.)
It definitely was A LOT easier living in Dallas with the WASP name I'd been relatively comfortable in Chicago with my Jew-label. Of course, people make assumptions based on my hair....which looks somewhat like Glenn's looked back then...so, silly assumptions! Of course, people do ask me frequently if I'm Italian (I'm not.)
