Hm. My dad, right on so many more things than I credited him for while he was alive, always described folks like these as "accidents waiting to happen." I acrually agreed with him (while he was alive!) and have ever since tried very hard to allow them their crashes Far Away From Me -- as you attempted to.
For myself, I tend to describe them as the singular of the Yiddish word putzim :-)
