Perrine sounds a bit scattered, too...

Chart creation in Excel is tolerable. Doing raytracing in Excel is not. Have you tried Octave? I use Matlab for almost all my ad-hoc investigations, and Octave is a fair equivalent. Vectorised numerical environment and a decent procedural language on top of it.
