I just heard a most disconcerting and loud thumping, and saw something disturbingly cat-sized plummet past my window. I got the distinct impression that a cat had fallen from the 2nd-floor roof, or possibly from the third-floor window (the one toms stand on the frame of to flirt with Perrine through the glass).

I can't see anything moving in the shadows, and I didn't hear any hurt-animal noises when I leaned out the window or when I went on the back porch; if there's a dead cat or one too seriously injured to make a sound, I won't see it until the sun is a little higher. But a small grey cat did flee the sound of my voice, so it's possible that he hit enough bits of wall, ivy, fire escape, etc. on the way down to slow enough to escape serious harm. Or that something inanimate fell, instead of a cat (possibly something knocked over by a cat?). Still ... disconcerting.

Um, I was under the impression that a cat's falling 2 or 3 stories was not generally damaging. I remember Rusty falling from a tree branch about third-story height, as a kitten, without damage - but she was young enough that neither her bones nor her dignity were completely calcified at that point.

I've both heard and read that cats survive falls from under a certain number of stories and over a certain number (I can't recall either one), but in between can get hurt or killed. The theory is that they can survive the impact of a pretty high fall, but if it's in a middling height they have enough time to tense up so they get hurt or killed more frequently. Lower falls they do OK with because they flip over and land on their feet usually.

A cat can safely fall from 2 stories but is safer falling from 4 stories. The cat has more time to adjust to fall and get all joints into the proper alignment. Not that it does not scare me to see my 9 pound cat jump from the top of a tree because it is faster than scaling.
