Sorry for the confusion -- I used post-by-email via an SMS message from my phone, and for some reason it didn't show up on LJ until yesterday. I've manually changed the timestamp on the entry to when I actually sent it.

I don't get all that many outages here (knock wood), but the "it's back; no, it's not; here it is again; whoops, no, it'll be several hours" thing is pretty annoying.

But any more often than once every three years, and I wish for working UPSes. (I'll have to see whether I have notes on the past few times; I think the average here is once or twice a year.)

Oh, ok. Well, yes, UPSs are very nice for short outages, and except for the hurricane last fall, all our outages have been short ones. The ones that make me cringe are the off ...... on ... off .. on ....... off .... on outages.

I've apparently jinxed myself. It seems we had a power outage today (all the machines at home to which I can connect have an uptime of 3 hours), and of course the dhcpd Sun didn't boot up. All the important servers (mail, web, secondary DNS, gateways) restarted, so the only one inconvenienced is [livejournal.com profile] mammasteed who probably can't connect to the Internet at the moment (nor anything else on our LAN). I tried calling her, but she's stopped answering the phone after so many bill collectors, sales calls, and sponge-like friends (no-one you know).

*nod* I just want long enough to a) ride through a short outage if I'm feeling lucky, or b) do an orderly shutdown if I'm feeling reasonable.

Hey, the Microcenter down this way (Fairfax) has a special going: A Belkin 500VA UPS for $47.49 ... I just picked one up tonight.
