It's not considered improper to make disparaging remarks about Americans

An interesting remark, given that it seems to no longer be true. It *is* now "improper" to make disparaging remarks about Americans (even if they use the word "unpatriotic" instead). That may just support the point, though -- America is less confident now than it's been in a generation (apparently a deliberate shift encouraged by the government)...

Good point -- and I think it does support the original point in the way you suggest ... But is it Americans it's "unpatriotic" to disparage, or only America, and does that make a difference here?

Well, it's apparently now unpatriotic to disparage the President. I think you could argue that particular example either way...
