"We're all driving each other insane. ABC carves out more time for commercials, so Fox adds a little more, then everybody else does it. We're giving people less show -- and then we wonder why our ratings keep going south." -- an unnamed "insider" at a television network, quoted in TV Guide, vol. 52, no. 4, 2004-01-24 (issue 2652), p.36

On the rare occasion when I watch an American series on the TV -- whether drama, soap, or inconsequentia -- approximately mid-way between two commercial breaks I notice there is a cut that seems to make no dramatic sense. It feels like a curtain of intermission. Then I realize that in the country of origin not only are the commercial breaks longer, but there are twice as much of them.

They are a good time to mush your laundry about, move wet stuff to dryer, check dryer to hang whatever's dry enough, or apply Replay or Tivo to get them out of the way. U.S. TV is tough. Hee-hee. There's a rhythm in the dance. I don't know how they get broadcast in Finland.

I'll watch for the cut, though. Some shows run two or three story lines at once. It gets a little confusing once you've stopped the TV to sort, mush, or hang the wash. Come to think of it, it's time for me to watch TV again. I may get laundry done.

"We're all driving each other insane."

Short drive.

Thanks for reminding me why I keep turning down my grandpa when he offers me a tv... He's been offering me one for about the last 10 years, and he still doesn't get it. :)

I keep getting tempted because if I had a tv, I could hook it to my computer and watch DVDs in comfort...

We have a TV and yet only use it to watch videos.

We are helped along by the fact that one must have cable in our town to get anything resembling reasonable TV reception. Our cable bill pays for Internet access. Thus our priorities are set.
