That's excellent, both about your figuring out that for you to cross-dress in public might make a difference and then having the courage to do it.
More generally, I think that a big piece of maturity is figuring out that what you're doing affects the social and emotional environment, rather than you just receiving what's going on--or maybe it's not maturity in a general sense, it's just something that I figured out relatively late.
There's at least one logistical piece to the idea of having pick-up bands at rest stops--you need an area which doesn't have Muzak. I suppose people can play on the lawn when the weather's decent to get the process started. Or could it work to improvise around the Muzak?
