I don't remember where I read the idea, but it's stuck with me: Cats evolve faster than humans due to shorter lifespans and having the chance for more generations within the same amount of years, and so housecats have evolved specifically to manipulate humans.
The disturbing thing is that, among the people I know who like cats, I used to be one of the most cat-manipulation-resistant. Eek! (If that's still true, it says something about Perrine's skill; if it's no longer true, it says something about how I've changed. Either way: Eek!)
I'm reminded again of a quote about how of all the animals that live with humans, cats are the only ones who were not domesticated by humans. Cats domesticated themselves because they saw advantage in it.
